Alone with God

September 12, 2022 By C. Michael Prater Leave a Comment

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. Psalm 46:10

I use this verse a lot in my life, along with some others, but I particularly need it now. Right now I need to spend alone time with my Heavenly Father and right now I need to know everything is alright. You might say that this is a odd thing to write about, but hear me out. How do you spend your alone time? I did not say how do you spend your alone time with God, just how do you spend your alone time?

I grew up not knowing idle time. Seems there was always something to do, even though I know as a boy I sometimes made the statement, “There’s nothing to do.” As I got older, I found out there was always something that needed to be done. Gardens needed weeded, grass needed cut, animals needed to be cared for, laundry needed done, house needed to be cleaned… you got the picture. There was always something to do and there was never enough time to be idle. Even in Old Testament times there was less idle and more work to be had. Somehow and in someway there was always idle time. How do we spend it?

Modern conveniences have allowed idleness to take on greater significances. Solomon understood this and lavished himself with every known pleasure there was. In the end, he said that it was all vexation of spirit. In truth, idleness can lead to emptiness unless it is filled with godliness. God’s Word says, “Be still…” Here is idleness and it requires us to consider what the writer has to say. In the stillness hear the rest of the line, “and know that I am God.” Do you know God sees all? knows all? that is going on with us. It is in the idle time we need to train ourselves to come to Him and sit in His presence quietly.

In the stillness of His presence we find that He has a message for our comfort and assurance, “I will be exalted amongst the heaven, I will be exalted in the earth.” In this moment of quiet He will be lifted up and exposed for whom He truly is. The fact is, our voice will tell the earth the truth. Our voice will tell of the majesty and power of God. In the stillness and presence of the Lord we prepare for what lies ahead of us. In silence we can bask in His glory and learn what He has for us to say.

Be still and know that I am God… what a powerful beginning of this week.
