Jeremiah 1:4 Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
Today’s scripture reading involved King Josiah who is one of my favorite characters in the Bible, especially of the kings of Judah. On Sunday I preached a message about him called, “The Boy Who Became King” in case you’re interested in checking that out. Most of today’s Bible reading though came from the book of Jeremiah. Jeremiah was a prophet who aided King Josiah during the years of reform and later prophesied under the reign of King Josiah’s sons. In all Jeremiah seems to have been a prophet upwards of 40 years. Jeremiah spent many years serving the Lord.
The verses noted above are the words of God spoken in some way to Jeremiah when he was yet a young man. God told him before he was ever born he had called him already for a purpose. A purpose that was all part of God’s sovereign plan. A plan that would not be easy for Jeremiah. A plan that would not be full of good times. Yet, it was God’s plan for Jeremiah before this world was ever created.
These verses got me thinking today about how many people in the world think they are in control. We all like to think we are masters of our own destiny. Rest assured though it is ultimately God who is control and God works all things out to where his will is accomplished and not necessarily our own.
I don’t know what the future holds for me. A slip and fall could take away my ability to work. An accident at an intersection could even take away my life. I don’t know what my future holds but God does. Whatever comes my way, I know God formed me for a purpose and he has provided everything necessary for His will to be accomplished. I just need to be obedient to his will. It doesn’t mean things will always be easy and it doesn’t mean that life at times might not be hard. It does mean though that God has a purpose for you and plan to get you through it.
Dear saint, you are precious in the eyes of the Lord. He has purposed everything about who you are. He made your lips, your mouth, and gave you your personality. Everything that makes you, you! So use what you have to praise him. Use what you have to serve him. Use what you have to seek his will in your life.
If you don’t know what your purpose is before God, then pray that he will reveal it. He will! God has great things for you to do!
