Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Ephesians 5:24
The order of the family is challenged all the time. Did you know that there was a Roman Caesar that outlawed marriage? Claudius outlawed marriage because he thought unmarried young men made better soldiers. When news of this order reached Roman villages many hearts of young people were broken. Young men and women wanted to marry but there wasn’t a clergyman who would defy Claudius’ decree. That is until one man, named Valentine held marriages in private and afterwards the young couples fled to other places. hoping to find somewhere away from the influences of Rome. Tradition has it that Valentine was eventually taken and martyred for his actions. That is the tradition of Saint Valentine.
There are many who ponder if the clergyman really existed. One thing is for certain is that couples fought for marriage. They wanted marriage and would not have relations until they were united in marriage. Going into the marriage they knew they would face struggle. The hardships of marriage included little money, unfulfilled promises, having children and scratching out a living on the hard soil. Still the institution of God was kept. (Genesis 2:24) I have seen many pictures of people of West Virginia and Kentucky raising families in the poorest of settings. Many times large families lived in two bedroom houses. They had small kitchens, wood burning stoves, dirt floors and not many luxuries. On Sunday these same folks gathered the children together, dressed them in their best clothes and headed to church. They had little, but they found that love was in Christ.
I have had many people ask me, “Weren’t women just a useless slaves?” That may friend is where you are wrong. You see yesterday I presented the actions of ungodly men towards their wives. In the godly homes, there was little respect between the man and the woman. In godly homes, if there was a problem, the local sheriff wasn’t called in, but the pastor. Many preachers would settle issues with the Bible in their hands and fists if necessary. Never think that a Christian home isn’t without controversary. Many face the same challenges everyone else does. If they truly know Christ as Lord and Savior, the man of God can direct them from the basis of the Word. If the couple has their heart right they will find repentance in Christ.
Why then are we having so much trouble in this world today? Why is same sex marriages an issue? Why do we have other marriage issues? The answer is clear. We don’t want God’s plan and we don’t want Him to interfere with the way we want it. I know this all too well. I for one am not ashamed to write about it or even address it. The only real home for us, is for all people everywhere to repent before God.
Our only hope is for Christ to intervene and for God’s called preachers to stand up and deliver the truth of His word.
