And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain. 1 Kings 18:41
Growing up in the Ohio valley I experienced a lot with my dad. Sometimes he would make a statement and I would listen in awe. We might be working the garden and he would say, “We need to hurry up and finish because I smell rain.” He might look to the sky and say, “Rain is coming in.” But the most pronounced statement to me was, “I hear the rain coming.”
When we are young we find our senses untrained to the rain. As we get older, we find that experience allows us to hone those senses. Think about the refreshment of rain coming in. The air smells a little fresher, the climate a little chillier and even our eyesight is rewarded as we see the plants prepare for the much needed rain. The aftermath of a good rain is obvious. The air smells cleaner, of course the ground is wetter and the environment around us is less dirty. All this is possible because of a rain shower.
In our verse for today, once again, Elijah tells the wicked king to get up, eat and drink for the sound of abundance of rain is coming. I am reminded that the Lord rains on the just and the unjust. The rain after a draught can really be devastating. Case in point, did you know that in 1908 the water levels of the Ohio River were such that people could cross the dry river bed on bicycle or on foot? Fast forward to the 1930s and suddenly all that was forgotten as floods devastated the cities all along the river. This led me to think of two things. Draught is never good because it hurts the people and the land. It can be good if the people fall on their faces and pray. On the other hand, heavy rain can be just as bad unless we fall on our faces and pray.
Once again, Elijah said, “Get thee down that the rain stop you not.” Israel was going to be covered in heavy rain. The streams would be full again. The roads would be covered in rain. Some places might be unpassable. If there is a great take away from this, it would be, revival is coming and you can’t stop it. The rain from God is coming to His people. Watch out evil for you don’t want it, but it is coming nonetheless.
Just a thought…
