What is Love

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 1 Corinthians 13:1

I recall that one time I heard a statement which was: I don’t think I really know what love is. When we read 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 we see the full action of love. The old KJV translators decided to use the word “Charity” for the koine Greek word agape. They understood that in the word Charity was the definition which best defines LOVE. The word CHARITY for Americans seems to be benevolence only, but when we look at the word deeper we see the fullness of the word and not just a single notion. See: https://av1611.com/kjbp/kjv-dictionary/charity.html

As I set here this morning and write, I think of the word Love and ponder its significance. I also think upon the statement told to me so long ago, about not being able to determine love. Like Charity, the word Love for Americans has become something which only exists between a man and a woman. We hear of words such as “Unrequited Love”, “True Love”, or even “Forgotten Love” and think about the challenge more than truth. In my years of living, I have found one truth, God is Love. (1 John 4:16-18)

If I am to learn the fulness of Love I must study God. Most people only think of God the Father when I say this, but I remind you that I speak of Jesus. Remember that Philip said to our Lord, “Show us the Father and it sufficeth us.” Only to be told by our Lord, “Have I been so long time with you, and yet you don’t know me?” (John 14:8-9) If we are to study love and understand it then look AT Jesus. Search the scripture and see the number of times you find Him compassionate, forgiving, caring, playful with children, giving and more. Search for the word Agape and see again the many times the Lord loved, not towards women alone, but all.

I long for Jesus’ love, and I have it. You see, we are told that He laid down His life for those that believed on Him. He who has the power to lay down His life and take it up again, has the power to save you. In the truest sense of the Word, He is love. If you want to know His love, I hope that I might be such a person to talk to. I can only say, “Let’s search for Him together.”
