In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. John 14:2
Have you ever wondered about the men who walked with Jesus? Yes, I am again speaking of those men Jesus called Apostles. They were born sinners and yes, they died because of their sins, however, they believed on Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. In truth, His death, burial and resurrection became alive in them. This truth is found in the text verse I have for us today. Yesterday, I mentioned that the Lord said to them to not be troubled at their faith. Now, He tells them, I am going to prepare a place for you in my Father’s house.
Of all the promises given by our Lord to His followers, this promise is a living promise. Jesus will never go back on His word. He isn’t like sinful humans for He is holy and dedicated to keep His promises. Case in point: I heard a story not long ago how an entitled individual connived another person to arrange a class trip for the parents and their children. Once this was done, the first person promised to be the transportation for the one who did the work. On the day the planner and her child were to be picked up, the first person stated to them via a phone call, “You didn’t seem very excited, so I invited someone else.” Jesus will never do this to someone, no matter what.
How do I know this? First, Jesus has never gone back on His Word! Beginning with Adam, came the promise of a redeemer. Jesus made sure this promise was kept even though the world was destroyed and sinful men did all they could to derail the promise. Second, Jesus promised to prepare a place in the mansions of God. If we Gentiles only understood the Jewish wedding more, we could understand this promise better. When the call went out to attend the wedding feast, everything was prepared and ready at the Father’s house. Third, this promise is given to the redeemed and not for all. Remember this, that Judas Iscariot was dismissed from the followers. Jesus called him a devil and even told him to go quickly from the Passover feast. Even then, the preserving hand of God was working.
The promise is given with this condition: To you my true believers, (vs.1) I say, don’t let your heart be troubled. (I have paid your sin debt). I am going from you to my Father’s house to prepare for your coming. (vs. 2) This is my promise and I will keep it.
Isn’t that good news? Don’t be taken in by so many who speak only of getting to heaven by their own merit. The way to heaven is through Christ alone. He will and has prepared for you because He alone gave His all for you, beginning with His death, burial and resurrection.
Think about it.
